GoodFoodNearYou (Free)

REVIEW – “Every Restaurant Nearbyâ€

GoodFoodNearYou is a very good concept, especially because it not only tracks local restaurants nearby but also locates convenience and grocery stores within your chosen location, tracked via GPS. That is especially convenient if you are in a new area and do not know your way around.  Based upon your selection, you can then determine the calorie, sodium, cholesterol, trans fat, and fat value of the meals offered by local restaurants. This can be quite helpful in choosing a healthy option for primarily fast food joints and chain restaurants. This can be a time saver for these selections.

However, one of the big drawbacks of this app is that it is only limited to chain and fast food restaurants, with very few local restaurants listed. In most areas, local restaurants offer the freshest fruit, vegetables, meat, and seafood. Hence, by eliminating these choices or offering only a a limited selection, the GoodFoodNearYou iPhone app does not really offer you the healthiest choices available in the area.

I also found the ads distracting. There was a florist ad right when I first opened the app, which I found confusing since the title of the app is GoodFoodNearYou.In comparison to Yelp which offers customer reviews, GoodFoodNearYou fails short of going a little deeper in its analysis of restaurants as well. However, GoodFoodNearYou does show you local convenience and grocery stores within your location so you could buy and cook a meal if you wanted.

While the concept is very appealing, i.e to click a button and see all the healthy choices within an area, GoodFoodNearYou does not quite live up to its claim. The information it presents in terms of meal breakdown is based on the assumption that low fat means good health. Hence, while I like the concept, I think this app needs a lot of improvement to really be of value to the consumer.
