Even before it was launched in 2006, the Apple iPhone has had its fair share of wannabes and would-be assassins cropping up all the way three years to this day. But the iPhone remains at the top of the food chain. Now if only Sony could get its act together in what many consider to be its most ambitious project ever – the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, it could very well take the pole position among the big 5 mobile phone makers with a handset that’s not only the best, but could easily be its most popular.
Jumping seven notches in the numeric order of its XPERIA line, Sony seems to say that’s its distancing itself from the earlier XPERIA handsets that wallowed in a less than able Windows OS without losing sight of the mobile “Xperience” factor underpinning the unique product line.
Exceeding iPhone Features
The mobile phone landscape was never the same after this. This time, there’s a potential for the X10 to make its presence endear itself to a market wanting a smartphone that combines not only the best of everything, but besting them all, including those from the iPhone. Here’s a quick look comparing the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 with the iPhone 3Gs.
- For starters the XPERIA X10 has a 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon processor to run the X10 compared to the 600MHz CPU on the iPhone. Both weigh 135 grams but the X10 is slighter larger at 119 x 63 x 13mm compared with the iPhone’s 115.1 x 62.1 x 12.3mm.
- While the iPhone only has 3.5” half-VGA capacitive multitouch touchscreen with 16 millions colors and oleophobic coating, the XPERIA X10 has 4-inch Wide-VGA capacitive touchscreen with scratch resistant coating, 64k color support upgradable to multitouch as well as more colors with an updated Android OS. Both have gravity accelerometers.
- Both are quad band GSMS/EDGE on 2G and tri band UMTS/HSDPA on 3G. The X10 has 8 GB of internal memory expandable to 16GB and comes with a 2GB microSD card in the sales kit while the iPhone has a non-expandable memory on its 16GB and 32GB models.
- The X10 has 8.1 megapixel autofocus touchfocus camera with LED photo-video light, QVGA video recording at 30fps, face recognition, image stabilization, red-eye reduction, smile detection and geo tagging. The iPhone as a 3 megapixel fixed focus camera with VGA video recording at 30fps, geo tagging and other features supplied by 3rd party application. The X10 uses the WebKit web browser while the iPhone uses its own Safari Mobile but both enjoy JavaScript, Flash and YouTube support. Email client with Exchange ActiveSync and MS Office attachment capability are common to both.
The iPhone has GPS, Compass and hundreds of apps including Tom Tom while the X10 gas Assisted GPOS with Wiseplot and Google Maps. Both have turn-by-turn spoken navigation.
