Downgrading from iOS4 for an iPhone 3G?
Originally I had bought an iPhone 3G in 2009 with the original operating system it came with (I believe it was 3.12 or 3.13) and I recently updated it to iOS4 (for the new features)- however in order for it to work now, it says I must insert a SIM card. The problem is, I bought the iPhone to use for the apps, as I already have a Blackberry which I use as my regular cellphone and I did not want to pay for an extra SIM card- so I basically use it as an iPod Touch. This, is my problem. I do not have a SIM card which I can use with the phone, and now I can’t even use it for the apps. Is there any way I can downgrade my iPhone back to the iOS3.12 or 3.13 (or anything which does not need SIM card activation)? I really need some help, so if anyone has any suggestions or answers, I would really appreciate it. Also, is it even possible for me to salvage my iPhone without a SIM card?

You will probably need to slip that SIM card from your Blackberry into your iPhone in order to activate it. They are the same size, right? My husband and I have discussed swapping SIMs between his BB and my iPhone before, and I can’t find any other way to do it online unless you’re willing to jailbreak. I had to remove my SIM to get a recent run-of-the-mill restore to work, no firmware change at all, but then had to put it back in when the restore was complete in order to activate it. This has nothing to do with what firmware you’re running, it happens any time you CHANGE the firmware– so you need it to upgrade AND downgrade. IDK why.
Since the SIM card is only being used here to “activate” the phone itself (it feels like you’ll be activating it to an iPhone plan, but you’re not, you’re just activating it for the purposes of having it recognized by iTunes so you can get past the connect to iTunes screen and sync it etc) you can activate it, then take the SIM out and put it back in your BB.
If this SIM swapping is just not an option (because of the size of the SIM card or whatever) then you will probably have to look at jailbreaking the phone with redsn0w, then unlock it with ulrasn0w– downgrading the firmware is irrelevant unless you don’t want to run iOS4 anymore.
I put a few links below on how you can activate an orphan iPhone– they all involve jailbreaking and unlocking, so again, I think either using your BB SIM or borrowing a friend’s SIM would be the best solution.
