Iphone Apps Won’T Launch

Why won’t my iPhone charge?
My iPhone (1st gen) ran out of battery earlier today, and in a manner no different from the ordinary, I responded by charging it. I plugged it in using the USB/AC adapter that it came with in the same socket I always charge it in.
About 4 hours later, to my surprise, the damn thing still has a red battery meter, about 10% full or less. The speakers aren’t responding, but headphones work. It won’t play videos, and some apps don’t launch. It also can’t detect the service provider (ie., it says “No Service”) It’s like it’s on a power saving mode of some sort, a mode I have never really known existed.
Help please! It’s an old gen iPhone but I’m not ready to replace it! 
I think the battery is not working becuase my charge butr after 3 hours it does not have much power. That is becuase the battery is wet and need to be replaced. I had to replace the battery and now its working well again. Mine is a 16g iphone
